ATHANASIOS E. ATHANASIOU POSTGRADUATE STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD

ABOUT THE AWARD

The Athanasios E. Athanasiou Postgraduate Student Research Award was established by the Board of Trustees of the Greek Orthodontic Society (GOS) in 2024. It honors the distinguished academic career and leadership in Orthodontic education of Professor Athanasios E. Athanasiou, former President of GOS.

Professor Athanasiou has played a pivotal role in training future orthodontists, contributing significantly to orthodontic research, and providing guidance to professional and academic organizations globally. The award aims to inspire postgraduate students to actively participate in an atmosphere of academic exchange and strive for excellence.

The award is presented to the best abstract featuring original, unpublished research, of a topic of orthodontic interest, conducted by a current or a former postgraduate student as part of their orthodontic specialty training program.

The nominees must not have graduated their orthodontic specialty training program for more than 1 year at the time of application for this award.
The award winner should present the research project during the 20th Annual European Postgraduate Student Orthodontic Society (EPSOS) Conference in Athens, on Sunday June 9th, 2024.

The award winner will receive a cash prize of 500 euros, a plaque from the GOS acknowledging the award and an invitation to attend the GOS Annual Congress and present the research project.

JUDGING AND NOTIFICATION

  1. Submitted abstracts will be reviewed to determine their eligibility.
  2. Submitted abstracts will be judged blindly by an independent and anonymous committee of three members determined by the GOS who will decide the winner. The review committee will not receive any information regarding the name of applicant or the orthodontic specialty training program. The decision of the committee is final.
  3. Submitted abstracts will be judged on originality, innovation, relevance, validity of research design, and implications on orthodontic applications.
  4. The winner will be notified on May 15th.

RULES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. The award is presented to the best abstract featuring original research on a topic of orthodontic interest, conducted by a current or a former postgraduate student as part of their orthodontic specialty training program.
  2. The work to be presented must not have been previously published, but it can be based on an ongoing research project.
  3. The nominees must be currently enrolled in an accredited orthodontic specialty training program or must not have completed their orthodontic specialty training in such a program for more than 1 year at the time of application for this award.
  4. Only one research project per institution is accepted.
  5. The award winner should present the research project during the Annual EPSOS Conference taking place together with the annual congress of the European Orthodontic Society. Each presentation will usually take 10 min, followed by 5 minutes for questions.
  6. Awards will be formally recognized by the Greek Orthodontic Society during the Annual EPSOS Conference.
  7. The award winner will receive a cash prize of 500 euros, a plaque from the GOS acknowledging the award and an invitation to attend the GOS Annual Congress and present the research project.
  8. The cash award will be provided directly to the winner only if he/she presents the research project at the designated Annual EPSOS Conference.
  9. The award winner should mention the Athanasios E. Athanasiou Postgraduate Student Research Award and the Greek Orthodontic Society in any publication or presentation resulting from the award-winning research project.

HOW TO APPLY

To submit an application for the Athanasios E. Athanasiou Postgraduate Student Research Award, please follow these steps:

  1. Submissions must be made by the program chair/director of the orthodontic specialty training program of the nominee. Please ensure that the designated individual handles the submission process.
  2. Each submission should include an abstract outlining the research project. The abstract should contain detailed information structured under the following subheadings: Abstract Title, Background, Aim, Research Design, Results, and Conclusions. Abstracts must not exceed 350 words.
  3. The deadline for submitting abstracts is April 30th, 2024. Abstracts received by this date will be considered for participation in the 2024 competition.
