ATHANASIOS E. ATHANASIOU STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD [GOS-EPSOS] 2025

ABOUT THE AWARD
The Athanasios E. Athanasiou Student Research Award [GOS-EPSOS] was established by the Board of Trustees of the Greek Orthodontic Society (GOS) in collaboration with the European Postgraduate Student Orthodontic Society (EPSOS), in 2024. It honors the distinguished academic career and leadership in Orthodontic education of Professor Athanasios E. Athanasiou, former President of GOS.
Professor Athanasiou has played a pivotal role in training future orthodontists, contributing significantly to orthodontic research, and providing guidance to professional and academic organizations globally. The award aims to inspire postgraduate students to actively participate in an atmosphere of academic exchange and strive for excellence.
The award is presented to the best abstract featuring original, unpublished research, of a topic of orthodontic interest, conducted by a current or a former postgraduate student as part of their orthodontic specialty training program.
The nominees must not have graduated their orthodontic specialty training program for more than 1 year at the time of closure of applications deadline for this award.
The award winner should present the research project during the 21st Annual European Postgraduate Student Orthodontic Society (EPSOS) Conference in Krakow, Poland, on Monday June 2nd, 2025.
The award winner will receive a cash prize of 500 euros, a plaque from the GOS acknowledging the award and an invitation to attend the GOS Annual Congress and present the research project.
HOW TO APPLY
Submissions for the award should be made through the GOS website [www.grortho.gr] by the program chair/director of the orthodontic specialty training program of the nominee.
All submissions should include an abstract describing the research project. Abstracts should contain the appropriate detailed information under the following subheadings: Abstract title, Background, Aim, Research design, Results, and Conclusions. Abstracts should be limited to 350 words.
All abstracts received by Friday May 9th, 2025, will be considered for participation in the competition for the year 2025.
JUDGING AND NOTIFICATION
- Submitted abstracts will be reviewed to determine their eligibility.
- Submitted abstracts will be judged blindly by an independent and anonymous committee of three members determined by the GOS who will decide the winner. The review committee will not receive any information regarding the name of applicant or the orthodontic specialty training program. The decision of the committee is final.
- Submitted abstracts will be judged on originality, innovation, relevance, validity of research design, and implications on orthodontic applications.
- The winner will be notified on May 18th, 2025.
RULES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The award is presented to the best abstract featuring original research on a topic of orthodontic interest, conducted by a current or a former postgraduate student as part of their orthodontic specialty training program.
- The work to be presented must not have been previously published, but it can be based on an ongoing research project.
- The nominees must be currently enrolled in an accredited orthodontic specialty training program or must not have completed their orthodontic specialty training in such a program for more than 1 year at the time of closure of applications deadline for this award.
- Only one research project per institution is accepted.
- The award winner should present the research project during the Annual EPSOS Conference taking place together with the annual congress of the European Orthodontic Society. Each presentation will usually take 5 min.
- Awards will be formally recognized by the Greek Orthodontic Society during the Annual EPSOS Conference, by the President of the GOS or a designated representative.
- The award winner will receive a cash prize of 500 euros, a plaque from the GOS acknowledging the award and an invitation to attend the GOS Annual Congress and present the research project.
- The cash award will be provided directly to the winner only if he/she presents the research project at the designated Annual EPSOS Conference.
- The award winner should mention the Athanasios E. Athanasiou Student Research Award [GOS-EPSOS] and the Greek Orthodontic Society in any publication or presentation resulting from the award-winning research project.
- The Greek Orthodontic Society may publicize the Athanasios E. Athanasiou Student Research Award [GOS-EPSOS] and the award winner in any way and means it deems fit.
- The European Postgraduate Student Orthodontic Society undertakes the obligation to publicize the Athanasios E. Athanasiou Student Research Award [GOS-EPSOS] through its website and social media channels and acknowledge the sponsorship of the Greek Orthodontic Society by featuring the Society name and logo in all relevant texts, graphics, posts or materials of any nature used to publicize the Award.
