ATHANASIOS E. ATHANASIOU STUDENT RESEARCH AWARD [GOS-EPSOS] 2026
ABOUT THE AWARD
The Athanasios E. Athanasiou Student Research Award [GOS-EPSOS] was established by the Board of Trustees of the Greek Orthodontic Society (GOS) in collaboration with the European Postgraduate Student Orthodontic Society (EPSOS), in 2024. It honors the distinguished academic career and leadership in Orthodontic education of Professor Athanasios E. Athanasiou, former President of GOS.
Professor Athanasiou has played a pivotal role in training future orthodontists, contributing significantly to orthodontic research, and providing guidance to professional and academic organizations globally. The award aims to inspire postgraduate students to actively participate in an atmosphere of academic exchange and strive for excellence.
The award is presented to the best abstract featuring original, unpublished research on a topic of orthodontic interest, conducted by a current or a former postgraduate student as part of their orthodontic specialty training program.
The nominees must not have graduated from their orthodontic specialty training program for more than 1 year at the time of the closure of the application deadline for this award.
The award winner should present the research project during the 22nd Annual European Postgraduate Student Orthodontic Society (EPSOS) Conference in Dublin, Ireland, on Sunday, June 7th, 2026.
The award winner will receive a 500-euro cash prize, a GOS acknowledgment plaque, and an invitation to present their research project at the GOS Annual Congress.
HOW TO APPLY
Submissions for the award should be made through the GOS website [www.grortho.gr] by the program chair/director of the orthodontic specialty training program of the nominee.
All submissions should include an abstract describing the research project. Abstracts should contain the appropriate detailed information under the following subheadings: Abstract title, Background, Aim, Research design, Results, and Conclusions. Abstracts should be limited to 350 words.
All abstracts received by Sunday, March 15th, 2026, will be considered for participation in the competition for the year 2026.
JUDGING AND NOTIFICATION
- Submitted abstracts will be reviewed to determine their eligibility.
2. Submitted abstracts will be judged blind by an independent committee of three members appointed by the GOS, who will determine the winner. The review committee will not receive any information about the applicant’s name or the orthodontic specialty training program. The committee’s decision is final.
3. Submitted abstracts will be judged on originality, innovation, relevance, validity of research design, and implications on orthodontic applications.
4. The winner will be notified on April 15th, 2026.
RULES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- The award is presented to the best abstract featuring original research on a topic of orthodontic interest, conducted by a current or a former postgraduate student as part of their orthodontic specialty training program.
2. The work to be presented must not have been previously published, at the time of the closure of the application deadline for this award, but it can be based on an ongoing research project.
3. The nominees must be currently enrolled in an accredited orthodontic specialty training program or must not have completed their orthodontic specialty training in such a program for more than 1 year at the time of the closure of the application deadline for this award.
4. Only one research project per institution is accepted.
5. The award winner should present the research project at the Annual EPSOS Conference, which is held alongside the annual congress of the European Orthodontic Society. Each presentation will usually last 5 min.
6. The award will be officially presented by the Greek Orthodontic Society during the Annual EPSOS Conference, either by the President of GOS or a designated representative.
7. The award winner will receive a 500-euro cash prize, a GOS acknowledgment plaque, and an invitation to present their research project at the GOS Annual Congress.
8. The cash award will be given directly to the winner only if they present their research
project at the designated Annual EPSOS Conference.
9. The award recipient should acknowledge the Athanasios E. Athanasiou Student Research Award [GOS-EPSOS] and the Greek Orthodontic Society in all publications or presentations that stem from the award-winning research project.
10. The Greek Orthodontic Society may publicize the Athanasios E. Athanasiou Student Research Award [GOS-EPSOS] and its recipient through any methods it considers appropriate.
11. The European Postgraduate Student Orthodontic Society commits to promoting the Athanasios E. Athanasiou Student Research Award [GOS-EPSOS] via its website and social media platforms. It will also recognize the Greek Orthodontic Society’s sponsorship by including the Society’s name and logo in all related texts, graphics, posts, or materials used to publicize the Award.
