Orthodontic management of Class II malocclusion by means of maxillary molar distalization supported with skeletal anchorage: Treatment options based on evidence

Orthodontic treatment of Class II malocclusion in terms of maxillary molar distalization using conventional modalities can be very challenging, especially in patients with poor compliance. In these cases, noncompliance approaches can be used, however with several unwanted side effects, which diminish their clinical effectiveness. Miniscrew implants, can be used as temporary anchorage devices (TADs) to enhance anchorage and, if properly used, to counterbalance these shortcomings. Depending on the biomechanical factors and the specific conditions of the individual patient, orthodontic biomechanics should be carefully considered and along with the orthodontic miniscrew implants (TADs) can be utilized effectively during treatment. This lecture will present the basic principles and the rationale of noncompliance maxillary molar distalization through various clinical examples and the applied biomechanics, as well as it will discuss the latest evidence-based data available regarding the effectiveness of the use of temporary anchorage devices (TADs) not only to only support maxillary molar distalization, but also their use as clinical aids for the comprehensive treatment of Class II malocclusion.
